ASIP 6.1 Overview

This addendum to Appleshare IP 6.0 training covers only the new features found in AppleShare IP 6.1. If you're new to AppleShare IP 6, be sure to review the AppleShare IP 6.0 training first, for an introduction to the product and details about its features and basic functionality.

This page gives you an overview of Appleshare IP 6.1:

The following pages on Installation & Use provide details on using the new features introduced with this new version.

What's New in AppleShare IP 6.1

This update to AppleShare IP 6.0 offers performance improvements, human interface enhancements, plus some exciting new features, described briefly below.

  • Remote Web Administration: Most administrative tasks that formerly required the administrator to be at the server--such as creating users & groups, starting or stopping mail and print services--can now be performed remotely over a TCP/IP network (LAN, WAN, or dial-in).

  • MultiDomain Support: The ASIP Web server can now have up to 50 unique home pages, with each served as the root page for its domain.

  • TCP Filtering: Similar to Firewall protection, TCP Filtering allows the administrator to set up filters that can allow or deny access to services to visitors, based on the client's IP address.

  • Shared Folder support: IMAP clients can share their mail folders with other local users.

  • LaserWriter 8.6.1: This version of the LaserWriter driver will support password-protected printing, when printing to an ASIP Print Queue (requires Mac OS 8.5 at the client). The client is prompted to enter a name and password at the time he creates a desktop printer. He can enter his authorization information at that time and save the settings, or leave the fields blank and be prompted for the name and password each time he prints. The Print Dialog box will also be modified with the Username and Password fields, and options to save those settings.

The final details of the new LaserWriter driver are not available at the time this training module went to press; see the documentation that ships with the final software for more details.

  • Administrator password works for all accounts. Now administrators can log in using a user account, without needing to know or change that user's password.

System Requirements

Server Requirements for 6.1:

AppleShare 6.1 has the same minimum hardware, operating system, and RAM requirements as ASIP 6.0 with this exception: TCP Filtering requires Mac OS 8.5 and Open Transport 2.0. Note that a Mac OS 8.5 install does not include Open Doc, which is needed by the ASIP Administration programs. The AppleShare IP 6.1 installer will detect if Open Doc is present, and install it if needed.

In addition, AppleShare 6.1 fully supports Mac OS 8.5.

Client Requirements:

Client requirements are the same as with ASIP 6.0, with these additions:

  • When attempting to use password-protected printing to a secure ASIP Print queue, Mac OS 8.5 with LaserWriter 8.6.1 is required.

  • Remote Web Administration requires at the client Netscape Navigator 3.0.1 or later , Netscape Communicator 4.0 or later, and Internet Explorer 3.0 or later.

Other web browsers that support frames and Java may also work, but these browsers have not been tested, and thus are not supported, by the Apple Technical Support team. Apple recommends Netscape Communicator 4.0 or Internet Explorer 4.0, or greater.
